Why unlicensed paid rides can void passenger motor insurance
Under Hong Kong’s Road Traffic Ordinance (Cap. 374) and cross-boundary transport rules, a private car may not carry passengers for hire or reward unless it holds the required hire-car permit or commercial cross-boundary quota. The insurance consequences are critical:
- “Hire or reward” exclusions in private policies: Standard private motor insurance covers social, domestic and pleasure use (or internal company use), and explicitly excludes carrying paying passengers.
- Repudiated claims after an accident: If an unlicensed private car is involved in a collision on the way to Hong Kong International Airport or across the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge, the insurer can refuse indemnity once paid carriage is established.
- Corporate Duty of Care and audit exposure: Unlicensed drivers cannot issue regulated travel-agency invoices or pass supplier due-diligence checks required by multinational corporate travel policies.

Locked fares before you pay—no surprise cash demands
Informal operators often quote a low figure on messaging apps and then demand extra cash on the day for bridge tolls, traffic congestion or luggage. On the Mayline booking page, your HKD price is shown before you pay and locked when you book—never increased for traffic, fuel or exchange rates. Point-to-point fares include tolls, tunnel charges and border fees, with any night or extra-stop rules stated upfront on our Pricing page.
